Effects of pitfall trap preservatives on specimen condition in carabid beetles

چکیده

Pitfall trapping is one of the most widely used methods for sampling ground-dwelling insects (Gullan & Cranston, 2004). The type of preservative used in pitfall traps may affect not only the sampling efficiency but also the condition of the samples (Lemieux & Lindgren, 1999; Schmidt et al., 2006). Furthermore, the type of preservative may affect the suitability of samples for further investigation, as demonstrated by a molecular study of spiders (Gurdebeke & Maelfait, 2002) and measurements of heavy metal concentrations in woodlice (Hendrickx et al., 2003). In most insects, the condition of the gonads (e.g., egg maturation) and morphology of the genitalia can provide useful information. Gonad condition is often used to estimate reproductive season (Loreau, 1985; Telfer & Butterfield, 2004) or as an index of parental investment (Morrow & Gage, 2000; Simmons & Emlen, 2006). The morphology of the genitalia can be examined for valuable taxonomic (Sasakawa & Kubota, 2005; Takami & Sota, 2006), phylogenetic (Sasakawa, 2005; Sota et al., 2005), and/or functional (Pitnick et al., 1999; Sasakawa, 2006) information. However, to date, no studies have examined the effects of preservatives on the condition of internal organs (e.g., gonads and genitalia) in collected samples. This study provides the first descriptions of such effects of pitfall trap preservatives on the morphologies of gonads and genitalia, using three carabid species.

An Assessment of Methods for Sampling Carabid Beetles (coleptera: Carabidae) in a Montane Rain Forest

Pitfall trapping is the traditional method for sampling carabid beetles and other grounddwelling invertebrates. Tests were carried out in the Udzungwa Mountains National Park between March 1999 and July 2000. Results indicated that pitfall traps were less efficient compared to manual searching methods, both in terms of relative abundance and species richness of carabid beetles. The results are ...

Sampling epigeal arthropods: an evaluation of fenced pitfall traps using mark-release-recapture and comparisons to unfenced pitfall traps in arable crops

The efficiency of fenced pitfall traps for estimating the density of commonly occurring epigeal predatory beetles was examined using mark-release-recapture. Most beetles of those recovered were recaptured within one week of their release. For seven of the ten species tested recapture rates were over 70%, with higher rates for the larger species. The predatory arthropod species composition captu...

Using demographic data to better interpret pitfall trap catches

The results of pitfall trapping are often interpreted as abundance in a particular habitat. At the same time, there are numerous cases of almost unrealistically high catches of ground beetles in seemingly unsuitable sites. The correlation of catches by pitfall trapping with the true distribution and abundance of Carabidae needs corroboration. During a full year survey in 2006/07 in the Lake Elt...

Using Malaise traps to sample ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae)

USDA Forest Service, Southern Research Station, 320 Green Street, Athens, Georgia 30602-2044, United States of America Ulyshen et al. 256 Pitfall traps provide an easy and inexpensive way to sample ground-dwelling arthropods (Spence and Niemela 1994; Spence et al. 1997; Abildsnes and Tommeras 2000) and have been used exclusively in many studies of the abundance and diversity of ground beetles (...

The effects of carabid beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) on the arthropod fauna of wheat fields in Chile.

The role of carabid beetles in reducing populations of phytophagous insects has been an elusive subject. A field experiment was established on a commercial wheat crop (cv. Otto) with an area of 4.5 ha in Valdivia, Chile, during the spring and summer of 1996-1997. The field had been under a prairie system for two years, before wheat sowing (fertilization and a pesticide had been applied during c...
